Q: where would I find info on San Francisco street car and bus?
I need to know San Francisco bus and street car routes

A: 511.org There's information on this website for every mode of transportation the city has to offer. It also has a trip planner where you punch in where you are and where you want to go, and it will tell you exactly how to get there and what bus, train, or ferry you need to take. It has helped me significantly since my move to San Francisco.

Q: How hard is it to sell a car in san francisco?
I am highly thinking of moving to S.F. to attend an art college their but i heard that since its so congested their that its best to use bus or other means of transportation besides automoblie. Problem is i have a car and i dont want to travel by plane because i have an expensive 1,000 dollar computer that i dont want to ship becuase im afraid it will be totaled when i get it shiped to me. Also is it wise period to have a car in that big of a city? Should i sell my car once i move their. BTW it is a 94' pontiac sunbird and it is in pretty good condition for its age. My bro knows how to fix cars and he did a pretty good job with mine..so yeah its worth buying.

A: If you will be living near the art college, then no, you definitely do not need a car in San Francisco. After you get moved and settled you will quickly start thinking of a car as a burden, since parking and insurance are very expensive here. It is far easier and way less expensive to walk, bus, or taxi everywhere. The bus and streetcar system is pretty good, and you can taxi almost anywhere you need to go in SF for $10 or less. We also have great services like City Carshare, where you can very inexpensively sign up to use a fleet car for a couple of hours once a week or so to run errands. It's like New York here... nobody who lives here keeps a car in the city. I sold my car on cars.com after I moved here. I had four solid offers within a week, and I got my asking price in cash. It was amazingly easy. But then, I was selling a recent-model upscale import. Even if your car is in great shape, you have to accept that the make and model is not a popular one in this area, so you probably will get less for it than you think. Good luck with the move!

Q: Do you need a car to explore san francisco?
Basically my friend and I are traveling to San Francisco and debating if we ned a car or not. We have heard that a cable car(I think) can drop you off downtown SF from the airport. Can anyone help us make a decision.

A: Unless you're thinking about daytrips in the Northern California countryside (and even if you're thinking about doing this, I would suggest timing things correctly so that your car rental is only for a day or two), the answer is no. Having a car downtown is a headache...SF's roads are congested, local drivers are overly aggressive, and parking is costly. Hotels in the city center charge 35.00-50.00 a night for valet parking (be warned: if you're bringing a car to check in to your hotel, some of the higher end places don't give you the choice of parking it yourself!). The BART subway system will take you downtown from SFO airport in half an hour.

Q: What are some good places to camp on a trip from San Francisco to San Diego?
I'm going to be traveling by car from San Francisco to San Diego over the course of a week and a half, camping in a tent along the way. Since I have a week to make this trip, it doesn't matter if I take a roundabout route (for example, going inland all the way to the Sierra Nevadas wouldn't bother me). What are some good places for me to camp on the trip? I prefer to be as secluded as possible, to get away from it all. Also, the cheaper the better! Thanks!

A: As I see it, you have 2 choices: Beach route or inland route. Doing both would take you a lot more than a week. If you want to head inland, you can always take off from S.F. and head to Lake Tahoe. It is about 5 hours to drive. Then, I'd head south into Yosemite. Your only downfall about these two places is that it is summer and you might be hard-pressed to find a campsite. NO JOKE--in Yosemite Valley you usually have to reserve a campsite 6 months in advance. You might have more luck finding sites that are outside the park. (From Lake Tahoe to Yosemite, take highway 395) After Yosemite you could either stick with the 395 and head to Death Valley, then Interstate 10 to Joshua Tree. You could also leave Yosemite on the 120 and head to Interstate 5, which can take you to places like King's Canyon and Sequoia National Park, and then into the LA area. If you wanted to go the beach route, skip the 1 (it will take much, much more than a week) and go on the 101. It gives you easy access to Santa Cruz, Monterrey, Big Sur, and San Simeon (Hearst Castle is a must see!), Pismo Beach, Santa Barbara, The Santa Monica Mountains (you can hike there to see where the show MASH was filmed), Hollywood, and then to Interstate 5 which will drive down the Southern California coast and into San Diego. My husband and I have done these trips many times and they are fabulous either way. It just depends on what you want to see. The coastal route offers many beach sites to camp. For a good reference on camping, I would recommend the book "California Camping;" that's our Bible. Have fun!!!!

Q: Where are some of the cheapest places to park in San Francisco?
I'm staying in Oakland but want to hang out in San Francisco during the day.Where are good places to park and leave my car in San Francisco while I'm out and about in the city?Where are the cheapest places to park for several hours or all day?

A: City-owned garages have the lowest prices-- Sutter/Stockton, 5th/Mission. However, if you're just going to drive over and park all day, why not just BART over and save the hassle?

Q: Looking good deal - rent a car San Francisco International Airport?
I need rent a car for 5 days (Jun 06 -> Jun 11) San Francisco International Airport. I'll use my own insurance. What company offer low rent quotes?

A: I recommend Dollar Rent a Car. And, I recommend that you don't rent at the airport. You can take BART right from your airport terminal to Downtown SF, Powell Station, and then walk three blocks up to Dollar on O'Farrell between Taylor and Mason. You'll save the airport fee, etc.

Q: How much time to drive San Francisco To Cabo and how are the roads for small cars?
And If there is nice Highway how much you usually pay to use it. Any information about the elevation and ferry to Mazatlan also will be appreciated. Thank.

A: You will have to get a permit for your vehicle at the border if you are going to mainland Mexico from La Paz The roads are good and there are federal highways and no tolls required. You are looking at around 24 hours of drive time for the Baja. Elevation is not an issue on the Baja as it is for the most part flat and dessert like and getting hot at this time of year. I am assuming you already know how long the U.S leg of the trip will take. The ferry to Mazatlan usually needs a reservation and you can stay at a nice hotel in La Paz called La Perla and get booking info and all the things you will need to know.

Q: San Francisco Cable Car Schedule and Ticket?
Does the cable car in San Francisco run on Saturday? If it does, where can I find the schedule? Also, where to buy the ticket? Do I pay to the bus driver or buy in advance?

A: There are 3 cable car lines, and they all run on Saturday, from 7am until midnight about every 15-20 minutes depending on what time you want to get on it. You can buy a ticket at the cable car turnaround, but its better if you buy it onboard. Here's the schedule: http://www.nextbus.com/wireless/miniRoute.shtml?a=sf-muni

Q: How long should it take to travel from midcoast Maine to San Francisco by car?
My brother is considering driving across the US in October - and I am curious to know how long it might take him.

A: I'd give it a good 5 days-- maybe even a week if he wants to stop ate certain places along the way. Should be a pretty drive though. That is something I want to do someday myself... You should come too! I'll meet you in SF for lunch!

A: Check out this website. http://www.cityrentacar.com/ Although, as a San Francisco Native, I might want to suggest you get a automatic transmission car if you are not used to driving stick shift in steep hills.

Q: San Francisco Car Thefts??!?
Hello i would be to immigrating from Singapore to San Francisco soon, and i will probably be buying a porsche 911 in San Francisco as cars are incredibly cheap there as compared to Singapore. However i worry that because i am asian i may get robbed of my car?Is San Francisco a safe place? I heard there are lots of car thefts....

A: San Francisco is a pretty culturally enlightened place. You probably won't get robbed because you are Asian. You may be robbed because you drive a porsche, but that could happen to you anywhere. You can decrease your odds of getting robbed if you stay away from the Oakland area, especially at night. If you are interested in buying a house in San Francisco, check out Taylor Morrison. They sell houses in the area, and have a free $25,000 sweepstakes on their website. http://is.gd/eDHX
