Q: Does any one know how much is the cost of air bags for 1995 toyota camry? in the los angeles area?
The chp & dmv is making it a big deal for a car we just bought to have air bags. I know it helps saves lives but from what I hear those things are expensive. And right now we are broke. Any real & good answers are very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

A: What is it that they're threatening to do for noncompliance?

Q: Where's the best place to buy a Toyota Prius in the Los Angeles area?
I'm looking to trade in a 2003 Volvo S70 wagon, and need a good trade in.

A: Paco's chop shop on Evergreen.

Q: Where in Los Angeles should I take my Toyota to get the breaks replaced?
My 4-runner's breaks are way worn and it's hard to break, even the engine light went off at this point. I hate going to mechanics, I always get ripped off and leave with a new problem. Is there anywhere anyone would recommend fo rme?? Thanks.

A: They rip you off when you say "Breaks". This is what you do at school or work. But "Brakes" are what stops your car. Most big box brake shops will rip you off. Ask around town for a local mechanic, not in a dealership, that other people use. Most brake problems are simple and cheap to fix. But Brake-O, Just Brakes, and other similar national chains that claim $99 specials for all around, are just a bait and switch scam where the prices suddenly go up to $700 when they get suckers in the door. I have an advantage of knowing how to fix my own. Here's a tip. Look for Better Business Bureau members and complaints before you use them. This can be done online from anywhere. You can also check with your local Chamber of Commerce in your county. They usually have a huge list of members in your area. Some charge a fee of around $25 to provide the list to the public. http://www.bbb.org/

Q: Can you recommend a good Los Angeles window tinting shop for my brand new Magnetic Gray Toyota Prius?
I'd also like to get an alarm put on her and I know that some places do both. I just want to be sure that both services are top notch. Thanks.

A: You may want to ask a more local Prius owners' group: http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/Bay_Area_Prius_fans/ It's really more CA-wide than just the Bay Area, though. Other places where you may get some recommendations: http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/toyota-prius/ http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/Prius-2G/ http://www.priusonline.com/ http://www.priuschat.com/ You really want to go with the factory alarm, rather than some aftermarket thing. Some aftermarket alarms do not play nicely with the Prius' electronics. All North American NHW20 Prius actually have the alarm (lights blink and horn beeps if a door/hood is opened while armed), just that the alarm is only turned on/accessable in certain option packages (it's a software thing). Some people have been able to get a dealer tech (who would have the necessary Toyota handheld tester needed to change the software parameter) to turn it on for free, or for just the labor charge, when asked nicely... Otherwise, you may have to get the RS3200 VIP "upgrade" which is basically the additional glass breakage sensor (microphone tuned to the sound of breaking glass, sets off the alarm) plus the tester instructions for turning the alarm on. Call around to different dealers and ask for pricing. While you're calling the dealers for the alarm pricing, also ask them who they recommend for window tinting, and their pricing.

Q: What is the best route for Driving from chicago to los angeles but avoiding the mountains?
Im planning on driving from Chicago to los angeles. I drive a toyota corolla 1993 with 93,000 miles on it. Some guy told me he did the drive before and that driving over the mountains would possibly destroy my transmission. I plan to go from 60-65 MPH and break every 4 hours for 30 min to let things cool down. How do i avoid the mountains? My plan is to use i-80 till i hit Denver then I-25 and finally I-40 to get to LA. Any realistic advice about this topic? also a guy at the auto shop told me to but some type of transmission coolant thing for $70 if i plan to drive the mountains. can someone give me some advice about this. i really cant afford my transmision going out so i want to play it safe. Johnny b good thanks for the advice.. i looked it up and it looks good but it adds on 400 miles/7 hours extra to my route. is it really worth it. are these mountains through denver that bad?

A: If you really want to avoid the mountains, you won't go to Denver. The best and flattest route is not the fastest. It is take I-55 south to St Louis, then I-44 to Oklahoma City. You then have a choice. If you want to run interstate highways all the way, you will go south on I-35 to Denton,TX, then I-35W south to loop 820 towards the west to I-30 west which will end into I-20 west which will end into I-10 west which runs all the way to Los Angeles. There will still be some hills, but it is the fastest flat route. You could go west from Oklahoma City to Amarillo. You then would go south on I-27 and be able to read and follow a map, because you would be taking a lot of 2-lane roads until you get to I-10 in western New Mexico. Then you again go west.

Q: How Much Money Do I Need to Move to Los Angeles?
I plan on moving to Los Angeles in June/July of next year. I've been looking for over a year and studying the city and places and all that and I've found some pretty good looking apartments in nice neighborhoods for around $700-$1400 a month. $700 being for a studio or one bedroom and $1400 for a two bedroom, I'm hoping to get a roommate when I get out there or before I get out there. I willing to live with the bare minimums for a while when i get there..i heard that goodwill is a good place to find furniture. I will most likely have a Toyota Prius by the time i move out there or another hybrid car because of gas and the only other thing I'm bringing with me besides that will be clothes, a $60 a month cell phone bill, and $106 a month car insurance payment...which I will probably have a few months already paid for in advance. I am a pharmacy technician here in Tuscaloosa, AL making $9.50/hr and hope I can find another pharmacy technician job in LA once soon after I get there. Oh and I will most likely be living in West Hollywood, Santa Monica, Brentwood, Westwood, or Century City.

A: Good luck...not being rude...I'm just saying that people don't move here because it's so reasonable. Even groceries and car insurance are more expensive here. Hope you find a place you like. (Try IKEA in Burbank or O.C. for cheaper furniture.)

Q: How much it costs to steam clean a car's engine in Los Angeles area ?
It is a 1990 Toyota, and has oil leak, small leak problem. Should I steam clean, or doing a detail job, before I fix it ?

A: I gotta find where Marjoe gets his work done, the prices are so low I could close my shop and send them to the place he goes... Cleaning an engine in the state of California is expensive. You have to have a recovery and treatment unit on site. I used to steam all the vehicles in my shop until the environmental department gave me a requirement list that made it to expensive to do for a small business. It costs 150-200 bucks in San Jose at a facility that handles that. The local community college lets me clean them for 75 bucks. If you want to go the steam clean route check with you local community college that has an automotive program, they often will do it cheaper than commercial places. If your a guy who just don't care then wait until night and head to your local coin operated car wash. Pop the hood and clean away, just don't let anyone see you. If you have an idea where the leak is (suspect the oil pan) then you can use a little simple green and your water hose, again make sure the neighbors don't see you otherwise its a steep fine.

Q: Is there a website to buy a car online to deliver locally to Los Angeles?
I want to charge the purchase onto my credit card and hate going to dealerships. Is there a trustworthy online site to do this transaction on? Do major dealerships have this option? Please help! I prefer a toyota or lexus hybrid vehicle.

A: Please think this through before you do anything. I'm not trying to sound harsh, I'm trying to stop you from stepping off the edge and committing what is probably the single biggest financial mistake of your life. First of all, you can't buy a car online, I mean it's possible but it's a foolish way to conduct business. You can shop around, compare, seach and decide what you like from your PC, but you can' t complete the transaction without seeing the car. Any car you choose will need to be inspected, driven and looked over carefully before the final decision is made. You can't do that by looking at a computer monitor. You have to visit the dealer in person, negotiate the price and make the deal face to face. No matter how uncomfortable it makes you feel. Take a friend or family member with you if the sales staff intimidates you. But please, don't step off the edge of a cliff to avoid a snake. Second, putting a $30,000 car on a credit card is financial suicide. The interest rate charged on that credit card will be three times what a conventional auto loan will be. Making your payments double or even triple that of a traditional loan. The way the Credit Card companies calculate interest will also cause you to pay way more interest than you would with a traditional car loan. Have you even considered what your monthly minimum payment would be on a credit card with a $30,000 balance? And by paying only the monthly minimum it will take you forever to pay off a balance that high. Maxing out a credit card limit will also severly effect your credit score, even if you do pay it on time. Using close to 100% of your available credit is a huge mistake and it will cost you by lowering your credit score and causing your interest rate to go up even higher. Do some research on financing. Don't make a foolish mistake. Ask your bank what the best approach will be to a new car purchase. I'm sure they will give you straight forward excellent advice. And it won't be to put the car on your VISA Card. I just calculated the payment on a $30,000 credit card balance. The minimum monthly payment is $750 a month and it will take you a staggering 492 months (41 years) to pay that balance down to zero. A traditional car loan would be $550 for 72 months (6 years). Do the math. Using your credit car that car would cost you $74,615 and you'll pay over $44,600 in interest alone. Using a traditional car loan you'll pay only $9500 in interest. You'll save enough money to buy yourself another car. Please re-think this plan of yours.

Q: Can I hook up a uhaul trailer to a 2005 toyota matrix?
I am planning a move from Houston to Los Angeles and would like to drive so I can bring some essential stuff with me. The movers will be taking everything else and that can take up to 2 weeks before delivery. Is it possible to hook up a small uhaul trailer to an '05 toyota matrix? I think it's FWD, not sure.

A: Todays cars must have towing built in to the body. You will have to get a hitch kit installed unless you car was made to do so. As for U-haul, they can do it for you someplaces or recommend where you can. I don't believe a Matrix is the best vehical for towing a trailer, unless it is small, 4'x 8' approx. For the price if it is a short move get a u-haul pickup truck or try budget for the same.
